Chris Hoskins

Chris began his Yoga study and practice in 1975. He learned the Hittleman approach as a junior in high school in Hayward, CA. He then trained in the Desikachar, Jois and Iyengar approaches. He studied Viniyoga with Leslie Kaminoff and Ashtanga Yoga with Beryl Bender and Thom Birch (NYC).

Concurrent with his Yoga study and practice, Chris began studying dance in 1975 at The Oakland Ballet Academy. He performed from 1978-86 as a Principal/Soloist with Oakland Ballet, Cleveland Ballet and Elliot Feld Ballet (NYC). Retiring from dance in 1988, he remained in New York City and became a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Certified Restorative Bodywork practitioner through the Personal Fitness & Bodywork Professionals Association.

He studied at Laban Institute of Movement Studies in the Certified Movement Analyst Program, 1992-93 (NYC), and Precise Applications of Diverse One-on-One Training Techniques with Jeff Bell, 1997-98 (NYC). He worked as a One-on-One Yoga and Fitness Trainer independently and in health & fitness clubs from 1988-1998 (NYC). In 1996 he began teaching group Yoga classes (NYC).

Chris returned to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1999 to advance his Yoga study. He completed intense training at Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, CA; finishing the 12-month Deep 99 program studying with Rodney Yee, and the 18-month Advanced Studies 2000 program studying with Rodney Yee, Mary Paffard, Richard Rosen, and Patricia Sullivan. Although he practiced and explored Restorative Yoga previously in his personal practice for many years, he began his formal study of it under the tutelage of Nancy Minges, 1999-2006, and Mary Paffard and JoAnn Lyons, 2000-2001.

He worked as a Yoga Teacher and Somatic Arts Trainer at The Club at The Claremont Resort & Spa in Berkeley, CA, 1999-2009, while teaching classes, workshops and one-on-one independently throughout the Bay Area. He taught ongoing group and one-on-one classes, held master classes, led practices, personal practice clinics, specialized workshops, and conducted Restorative Yoga workshops at his studio, Studio Yoga 6 in Berkeley, CA, 2007-2018. His extensive experience teaching Restorative Yoga and wellness is rooted in these years of long-standing, wide-ranging teaching.

Throughout his years of performing, and studying dance, Yoga, movement and fitness, Chris has maintained his personal Yoga practice while constantly integrating elements from various other modalities he was exposed to and studied. His perspective and teaching are informed by the experience of having practiced Yoga and wellness throughout the phases and stages of life from his teen years to the present, and thousands of hours learning from the wisdom of his students. The natural outgrowth of this is that he developed a unique approach to his personal practice and teaching that is deeply centered in wellness and an emphasis on self-care.

Over the course of 37 years of teaching, Chris has worked with and taught adults, youth, seniors, people with disabilities and special needs, athletes, martial artists and dancers. In 2018 he concluded teaching ongoing group classes and shifted his focus to working one-on-one with students and dedicating his energy to creating DeepDrop Wellness.
